Do you have a private well at your home or work place? Do you test it on a regular basis for coliform bacteria and other contaminants? You should!! Many people seem to think that once they either install a well or purchase a home and have the well tested as part of the normal inspection process….that all will be fine for as long as they live in their home. That could be a very costly mistake that could result in some serious health issues for you, your family and co-workers. In our 30 plus years of experience in the Real Estate business, a month does not go by whereas we are involved in the sale of a home with a private well, and upon testing of the water as part of the normal inspection process discover an unsafe level of coliform bacteria and/or other contaminants. And, of course the question we always ask the property owner is when they most recently had their well tested. We are often shocked by the answer which can often be “never…only when we purchased the home 20 or so years ago”. The first question that we ask ourselves is….“wonder how long the well has been contaminated and these homeowners have been drinking the water…and what health issues could have been prevented?”. Think of how times you drink water from your home or office….cooking, brushing of our teeth…..think about it.
What should you be doing? In our opinion you should be testing your water at least once per year. It is not expensive to do and you can actually even purchase some self-test kits at your local hardware store…however, we recommend your water be tested by a professional lab. If you have had contamination problems in the past….it may be prudent to test more often.
What do you do if you have raised coliform bacteria levels? The simplest answer is to have a company that services your well can treat the well (sometimes call “shocking”) to eliminate the contamination. It is also possible to do this yourself. Follow this link to an article by The University of Georgia with some helpful tips on how to shock your well. Of course whether you use a well company or do it yourself, make sure to retest.
