I stopped in the other evening for a quick libation at a pub in Florida (yeah, had to get away from the cold for a few days). It was a Tuesday which normally is a very slow days in most bars and pubs. This place was PACKED and the crowd was animated and very involved with what looked like an emcee or something. What was going on was their normal “Tuesday Comedy Auction”. What is a comedy auction you ask, as I did? Patrons were quick to explain to this ‘northerner’ how this pub came up with a way to make ‘slow Tuesday’ into a ‘busy Tuesday’….each an every week….without spending a dime!!!!!
The Pub owner realized how slow Tuesday’s historically were. He tried music, karaoke, etc. but to no avail. And of course these things cost money. What he also noticed was how busy ‘yard sales’ and ‘flea markets’ are, particularly in this area of Florida. So he thought ‘out of the box’ and came up with a winner. Here is how it works. He has a sign outside the Pub announcing the ‘Comedy Auction’ and folks on Tuesday mornings and early afternoon can bring in any stuff they want to sell (like they would at a yard sale). They establish their minimum price and then starting at 7PM, the auctioneer goes to work auctioning off the stuff. The Pub keeps 20% of the proceeds to pay the auctioneer and I will tell you that it was fun to watch. Why is it called a “Comedy Auction”…I guess you would have to be there to understand.
Do you have particular business issue that you have not been able to solve…like a slow day, a product that does not move, etc.? Have you thought out of the box like this business owner did…..it might be a good time to take a peek out of the box that we sometimes spend too much time in. No progress is made unless one leaves their comfort zone’.
