When I built the real estate company I once owned (J. W. Riker, Realtors) from a handful of agents to 16 offices, 275 sales associates and 30 employees (1980-2000  and sold to the largest national firm), we realized that our success was really based on two major strategies.

  • We were able to attract enthusiastic, hard-working individuals who were committed to providing top-level quality service with integrity and honesty and the attitude that “no one would try harder”.
  • We also realized that no matter how good you were……you had to have a plan to tell the world about yourself, your services and commitments.  We had developed an ever changing and forceful marketing strategy (note, I did not say advertising) that took into consideration various media outlets and programs.  The times were very different than they are today with the onset of social media, the internet, etc….. but we made maximum use of what was available at the time.


  • Are you making use of the Social Media tools that are available today?  Is your business known on FaceBook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc?  Are you posting relevant content to convince your present and hopeful future clients of why they should be doing business with you?
  • Do you have a website that makes the best use of the Internet?
  • Do you post meaningful content on your blog so as to become a “source” of information for your industry?
  • Do you have a Public Relation strategy to make use of newspaper releases on the happenings in your company and your place in your industry?
  • Do you produce and distribute a monthly/quarterly newsletter to your clients and spheres of influence?
  • Do you have an overall marketing strategy…..or do you just throw in an ad in various media every now and then?
